Schauenstein Schloss Hotel Restaurant – perfection
Schauenstein is the kind of restaurant which truly gives you the whole package, a complete experience which starts even before you have entered the dining room. For most people it starts with a scenic train or car journey from Zürich of about two hours. You will witness breathtaking views of the surroundings before you arrive at the doorsteps of an old castle in a village called Fürstenau.
There are several castles in the Domleschg Valley which is surrounded by the Swiss Alps, so the location of Schauenstein feels obvious when you arrive. Fürstenau has documentation from 1257 so you are by all means stepping into history during your stay at Schauenstein. The castle got its present name in 1667 and offers a rich history which will be shared with you during your stay at Schauenstein. The attention to details is present everywhere all the time when you are at this amazing restaurant. Small collectable cards are given to you regularly presenting the food & wine, but they also share small stories with you, and all the cards can be put into an album which you are also given. The whole setting from your arrival until you say goodbye is one of a kind, a something you will remember and look forward to return to.
But make sure to make your reservation early, or you will not stand a chance of getting a reservation. The vast majority of the guests is from Switzerland and Chef Patron Andreas Caminada is almost considered a national saint, which is understandable considering his amazing culinary skills and his warm-hearted personality. There are only about 26 seats in the two dining rooms, and only six rooms in the castle if you like to spend the night there as well, so there are few other occasions when a reservation is more essential.
Andreas Caminada was born in the region in Graubünden, and he has worked at several top restaurants like Wirtschaft Zum Wiesengrund in Switzerland and Bareiss Restaurant in Germany before he founded his top gourmet destination in 2003. Today he is responsible for one of the best restaurants in the world much thanks to his remarkable attention to details and his ability to combine simplicity in his cooking with sheer beauty of his presentations. To make a long story short – his food is simply mind-blowing delicious.
Andreas has a sidekick who also worked at the Bareiss Restaurant previously – Oliver Friedrich, who is the Restaurant Manager and Sommelier. His performance is impeccable and you will not leave the restaurant unhappy in any way.
Schauenstein Schloss Hotel Restaurant is one of those rare gems where everything is as close to perfect as it can be, from the very first good afternoon to the very last farewell.
