M on the Bund – casual fine dining in Shanghai
Back in
1999 M on the Bund was the first restaurant with international ambitions to be
established in Shanghai. The restaurant is situated on the top floor of a
colonial building on the Bund and offers some of the best views of Pudong's
impressive skyscrapers, the Huangpu River and the Bund from its terrace or big
windows. Australian restaurateur Michelle Garnaut managed to do what no one had
done before with the Bund, to make it interesting even in the evenings and to
attract hordes of the it-crowd.
Today M on the Bund is not as fancy as some of the other restaurants in the area, such as Jean Georges, T8 and Laris, and it is obvious that the restaurant has been spoiled with fully booked evenings year after year, because the service level has deteriorated and so has the quality of the food compared to the competition. But M on the Bund still attracts and is still worth visiting, especially if it was some time since your last visit. The design of the restaurant and the international cuisine with North African, European and Australian flavours still manage to seduce you. And frankly, the competition in Shanghai is not that fierce so there are not even close to as many high quality restaurants in Shanghai compared to other international cities like New York or Tokyo. So do not expect the most high end haute cuisine when you dine at Michelle Garnaut’s M on the Bund in Shanghai, but you can look forward to have some decent salmon, foie gras, leg of lamb, rib eye or some M house salad. Before dinner you should definitely make a stop at M's Glamour Bar located on the same floor, where you can enjoy a drink and a pre-appetiser of some frog legs covered in batter. M on the Bund is decent and that might just be good enough for a night out in Shanghai. M on the Bund scored 58 points of 100 points in our rating system. View our Top 60 of the world.
