Shang Palace – authentic Chinese
Hong Kong is a dream comes true for foodies. There are many restaurants of absolute top quality and all sorts of cuisines to be found. Hong Kong is also the capital of Cantonese Chinese cuisine which is considered as the best Chinese cuisine by many, and we can only say the Cantonese really is one of the very best. Shang Palace located inside Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong, is one of the city’s best and most luxurious venues.
Some might think that the best Chinese restaurants never have any visits by foreigners and that the many top Chinese restaurants located inside the most luxurious hotels in Hong Kong are just for tourists. That is wrong. Yes, you will see people from all over the world at a restaurant like Shang Palace, but that does not mean that the locals avoid it. Of course there are plenty of great Chinese restaurants with delicious food all over Hong Kong and not always in the most expensive neighbourhoods, but not as lavish as the top Chinese restaurants located inside the best hotels. We can promise you that we look into all these restaurants on a regular basis, but the most luxurious restaurants normally also manage to attract the absolutely best chefs like Executive Chinese Chef Mok Kit Keung who is a true master when it comes to traditional Cantonese cooking.
Mok Kit Keung has more than 35 years of experience so he has certainly perfected his techniques and style over the past decades. The Chef worked almost 20 years in Singapore before he returned to Hong Kong again. He worked at several convention centers and luxury hotels such as Raffles Hotel Singapore, Suntech Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center and most recently at the Marina Bay Sands where he was the Chef de Cuisine for four Chinese restaurants with more than 75 chefs. Today he is the head of Shang Palace on the Kowloon peninsula and most of his staff have worked at the restaurant for one to two decades so they really stay faithful to the style and cooking of the restaurant.
You can expect traditional Cantonese Chinese, but as with many of the best Chinese restaurants you will find contemporary touches and more modern presentations à la Chef Mok Kit Keung. And as with most Chinese restaurants you will have a thick menu with many dishes to choose from. Some of our favourites are the crispy suckling pig accompanied with deep-fried cereal prawns; the signature braised imperial bird’s nest, lobster and cordyceps with gold leaf; and the roasted rack of lamb with red wine sauce Chinese style.
Shang Palace is decorated in red and gold motifs reminiscent of the Sung Dynasty which feels genuine and can make you feel like you are teleported back in time, but Chef Mok Kit Keung’s cooking will keep you present with his delicious food.
Shang Palace scored 80 points of 100 points in our rating system. View our Top 60 of the world. Back to the reviews.
