Sorn – Southern Thai
Restaurant Sorn a fine dining restaurant located in the center of Bangkok in Thailand. The restaurant is housed in beautiful 90-year-old house that is located at the end of a litle ‘soi’ (alley) near the Four Wings Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi, in the center of Bangkok. Guests enter the building through a small hallway and can enjoy an aperitif in the beautiful bar before starting the meal. The interior is luxurious, featuring golden and warm colours and lots of wood. Many accessories from the Southern Thai cuisine are on display throughout the interior. The diners are divided into several dining rooms on the ground and the first floor, and some of them offer great views on the kitchen. No more than 22 guests are allowed per service.
Sorn is the brainchild from Khun Ice and Chef Yod, both hailing from Southern Thailand. Both of them are true fans of the food from their birth area and translated that love into the concept of Sorn. Southern Thai food is at the core of a meal here and guests are given the opportunity to truly learn more about this specific cuisine. From the idyllic Southern beaches to the lush tropical forests, almost all of the ingredients are coming from Southern Thailand. Sustainably is important for Khun Ice and Chef Yod, and they only buy their produce from their own network of farmers and anglers, directly from Southern Thailand.
The cooking at Sorn is Thai, but refined, elegant and above all very delicious. Ingredients from all of the 14 Southern Thai provinces are used. Besides these ingredients, the cooking techniques from Southern Thailand are important as well. Expect clay pot cooking, leave-steaming, charcoal grilling and many others. The experienced staff guides guests through the meal, explaining in depth about the ingredients and the techniques. A very unique and informative dining experience indeed!
A meal at Sorn encompasses around 14 courses with more than 22 dishes in total. It starts with a selection of Southern Thai bite-size snacks, like ‘sand mole crabs’ or ‘grilled Southern chicken’, before moving to more filling dishes like the ‘Forest meets the Sea’ salad, which consists out of Southern herbs, turmeric rice, morinda rice, and a fish innards dressing. The main course is called ‘The Thai way of sharing’ and offers a table full of different dishes. We enjoyed famous Southern Thai classics such as the ‘fresh yellow curry’, ‘stinky beans’, ‘grilled crispy pork’, and ‘taro soup’. After this amazing main course, some more smaller courses are served, before ending with the sweet dishes. Oh, and be prepared to eat spicy, as the level of spiciness is… Southern Thai, meaning very spicy (Southern Thai food is the spiciest of all of Thailand).
Restaurant Sorn received a Michelin star only a few months after its opening in 2018. It immediately became one of the hottest (as in most wanted and spiciest at the same time) restaurants in Asia. There's already a five months waiting list and we can understand why. The concept of Southern Thai food, translated into a fine dining experience, is truly unique and perfectly executed. An experience not to be missed in Thailand!
