sushi sho – edomae enjoyment
At first look Sushi Sho seems to be a regular small counter seated sushi place but it is when you start tasting its dishes you understand that it is larger than it looks.
Carl Ishizaki opened Sushi Sho in 2014. He has spent 20 years working with sushi and wanted to raise the bar and establish a Edomae style sushi bar with top quality seafood that would be something completely different than all those take away sushi bars that exist.
The menu is omakase which means that the chef decides what is served depending on what is best each day and dishes arrive in a tempo as you eat them. Most of the seats are counter seats in a cramped and cosy atmosphere where you have a good view of the chefs preparing your food. As starter there is a nice selection of small little delicious side dishes like octopus with soya marinated egg and then a nice selection of nigiri sushi arrives. The seafood is mostly from waters around Scandinavia but some fish is sourced further like tuna from Spain. Carl and his team have had to build and train their suppliers to get the selection of fish they want and also which fish tastes best in each season. Depending on season, expect to taste a delicious array of mackerel, sea bream, cod, turbot, trout etc. served with two different types of Japanese rice. All in all there are about 15 dishes in the menu.
To drink there is a good selection of wine but even a more interesting selection of sake, they even sometimes have Namazake, fresh and unpasteurised which is flown in refrigerated from Japan!
The interior is minimalistic with white tiled walls, the seating around the counter is small and there is a lively atmosphere with guests talking and music playing. They have several seatings per evening but the food is still served at a nice pace but do not expect a cosy spacious place to hang around for a quiet table served meal. Sushi Sho is a place to go if you want to have serious sushi with great seafood in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.
