The Tasting Room – in the winelands
There are several really good restaurants in South Africa. Le Quartier Français and its top dining restaurant The Tasting Room in Franschhoek is certainly one of the best.
South African fine dining restaurants are similar in several ways. They usually offer really good value for money where you easily can have a dinner for two persons below 300 dollars even at the best restaurants. But there is poor service in general compared to the best in Europe, Asia and the United States. You should not be surprised if you get the wine served several minutes after your dish is served etcetera. Luckily you will not notice that at this fine establishment.
Le Quartier Français is located in the central Franschhoek which is one of the best wine districts in Africa. The location of the restaurant and hotel is stunning even if it is quite close to a busy road crossing Franschhoek. The restaurant’s fine dining venue is named The Tasting Room. Executive Chef Margot Janse uses the best seasonal local ingredients and her attention to the best produce is impressive. Janse is one of the most renowned chefs in Africa and she certainly deserves the accolades.
The menu is innovative and somewhat experimental with a very nice fusion of European (mostly French) and African. This is one of the few restaurants where you can have wildebeest and foie gras in the same evening.
Margot Janse comes from The Netherlands and joined the restaurant in 1995. She uses vegetables and herbs from the property's own garden to many of her dishes and you will have a wonderful African inspired cuisine based on European cooking techniques.
Le Quartier Français is an exquisite auberge in the heart of the Cape Winelands and The Tasting Room offers a fantastic dinner experience so a reservation should be considered if you are in the area.
