Borkonyha Winekitchen – tasteful

Borkonyha Winekitchen is a gourmet restaurant located in the centre of Budapest near the Basilica, the Liberty Square and the Danube River. The small pedestrian street is full of restaurants and Borkonyha attracts the passengers with a street side terrace, a casual bistro interior, and wines – lots of them. When weather permits, the choice for the cosy terrace is obvious. However, on colder or wetter days, the inside of the restaurant is equally appealing with a beautiful and traditional interior, incorporating lots of glass and atmospheric colours. The atmosphere could be compared with that of the great bistros around the world, completed with a traditional Hungarian twist.

Head Chef Ákos Sárközi is passionate about wines and the name of his restaurant ‘Winekitchen’ speaks for itself. The concept is based on the wide and diverse wine list that is combined with delicious dishes. The wine assortment includes 200 different, mostly Hungarian wines that represent also some little and less known producers. Borkonyha offers no less than 48 wines by the glass and has a temperature-controlled wine shelf with a 1200-bottle-capacity.

Head Chef Ákos Sárközi gained experience in Restaurant Villa Joya Portugal and in Restaurant Alabárdos Budapest. His relaxed, genuine cooking style combines authentic ingredients with a refined presentation. His ambitious bistro cuisine shows that Hungarian cuisine can easily be matched with influences from other European countries like Romania, Spain, France or Italy.

Guests can choose interesting priced à la carte dishes or go for the five-course tasting menu. Fresh Hungarian foie gras is served with carrot purée, marinated cherries, beetroot salad and basil oil. A delicious dish based on excellent products and spot-on ingredient combinations. Venison, perfectly cooked, comes with celery purée and grilled celery slices. Next to it, veal tongue lasagne, pistachio cracker, white garlic capers, venison jus and a finishing touch of truffle oil.

Borkonyha is a great gourmet restaurant to enjoy and experience top class food without feeling obliged to dress up in a suit or being uncomfortable. You can simply relax and enjoy dishes that are qualitative, tasteful and nicely presented. The wine choice is immense and focuses on high quality Hungarian wines. Expect a no-nonsense but comprehensive culinary experience where all elements blend nicely together.
