de Mondion – medieval fine dining
There are not many gourmet guides for the small country of Malta located in the Mediterranean. That certainly does not stop wbpstars.com to send their team to Malta for the quest of the country’s best restaurant. We have now found it and it is named de Mondion.
Mdina is a small medieval city located on a hilltop on the biggest island of Malta. The city is fortified with bastion walls surrounding it and inside you will find The Xara Palace that is a member of the Relais & Châteaux group with its signature restaurant de Mondion. The Xara Palace has only been around since 1999, but the building it is located in was built in the 17th Century as a residence for the noble family Moscati Parisio.
Chef de Cuisine Kevin Bonello got his training in Malta and at the Berkeley in London and he was only 23 years old when he was appointed the Executive Chef of The Xara Palace that is recognised as one of the best hotels in the country. Now in his early thirties Kevin Bonello has pronounced that he will follow and do all it takes to be just as good as any top rated restaurant. Frankly there is a bit more to go, but Kevin Bonello and his team are on the right path, indeed.
The menu is heavily influenced by the Mediterranean cuisine as expected and we recommend going with a starter like the shellfish risotto with local red shrimps and Courgette flowers, a main like the roasted local rabbit loin filled with tomato jam and finish off with a dessert like the lime mousse, blackberries and pistachio Joconde Millefeuille. Your taste buds will appreciate those selections and you will not be too full up considering the mostly warm Malta evenings.
Dine al fresco for the best experience of de Mondion and go a bit crazy on the extensive wine selections where you can do some bargains if you choose wisely. We like the ambition of de Mondion and its team that certainly moves in the correct direction. Some final touches here and there and an even more raised level of the tastes and this restaurant can start compete on an higher international level as well.
