Baoase Curaçao
Willemstad
Some luxury resorts are defined by grand architecture, vast swimming pools and an endless catalogue of facilities. Baoase Curaçao takes a decidedly different route. The moment you enter, the outside world seems to fade away. Tropical gardens grow thickly around winding wooden pathways, Balinese sculptures appear between palms and enormous coral rocks, and eventually the vegetation opens onto an extraordinarily blue private lagoon. The result feels less like arriving at a traditional Caribbean resort and more like discovering someone’s highly personal tropical retreat. That is hardly accidental. Baoase grew from the vision of Dutch couple Ad and Bibi van der Valk, who began developing the property in 2005. The resort welcomed its first guests several years later and has gradually evolved into one of Curaçao’s most exclusive addresses. Its very name reflects those personal origins, combining the founders’ names with the idea of an oasis.
Despite its international reputation today, Baoase has retained much of that original intimacy. There are no imposing hotel blocks and little sense of formality. Instead, villas disappear into tropical greenery, tables stand beneath palm trees and secluded loungers are positioned along the water. It is a place where luxury is deliberately softened by nature. And perhaps most remarkably, the casual appearance hides a level of comfort and refinement that is far higher than you might initially expect.
Location & Hotel
Baoase occupies a privileged position on the southern coast of Curaçao, only a short drive from Willemstad. This proximity is particularly convenient: the restaurants, architecture and colourful streets of the island’s capital remain easily accessible, while inside the resort there is remarkably little indication that a city is nearby.
Passing through the entrance feels like entering another environment altogether. Dense tropical planting surrounds the accommodation, while wooden walkways lead through gardens decorated with Indonesian and Balinese antiques, carved doors, statues and weathered stone. The Asian influence is unmistakable, yet it is combined with the textures and colours of the Caribbean rather than imposed upon them.
Eventually the gardens meet the water.
One of the defining elements of Baoase is its sheltered lagoon. An artificial island protects the waterfront from the stronger movement of the Caribbean Sea, creating calm turquoise water immediately in front of the resort. The difference between both sides is striking: inside lies an almost tranquil tropical lagoon; beyond the rocks, the darker blue open Caribbean stretches towards the horizon.
The photographs illustrate particularly well how successfully the property has been integrated into its surroundings. From across the lagoon, Baoase almost disappears. Palms dominate the skyline rather than buildings, while the restaurant, cabanas and accommodation reveal themselves gradually between the vegetation.
The property remains deliberately boutique in scale, with 23 rooms, suites and villas, including a significant number with private pools. Instead of being concentrated within one main building, they are distributed throughout the gardens and waterfront.
This arrangement gives Baoase its defining sense of privacy. Even the communal areas are fragmented into smaller spaces: a few chairs beneath a palm tree here, a cabana beside the lagoon there, another terrace hidden behind vegetation.
Nothing feels particularly monumental. That is precisely the point.
Rooms & Suites
Baoase offers an intimate collection of rooms, suites and villas, ranging from romantic hideaways for two to substantial multi-bedroom residences for families and groups. Rather than following one uniform design, the different categories each have their own character and relationship with the surrounding gardens, lagoon or Caribbean Sea.
Couples can choose from Honeymoon Suites, Beachfront Pool Suites and the particularly private Superior Beachfront Pool Suite, with its own infinity pool and direct connection to the beach. Families have several compelling alternatives, including the multi-bedroom Private Pool Villas and Tropical Pool Villas, combining generous living spaces, kitchens and private or shared pools with the services of a luxury resort.
Superior Private Pool Villa:
At the top of the collection sits the approximately 450-square-metre Master Villa, with extensive indoor and outdoor living areas, a private infinity pool, whirlpool and ocean views. By connecting neighbouring accommodations, it can even be transformed into a six-bedroom residence for larger families or groups.
Tropical Pool Villa:
What connects the different categories is Baoase’s strong indoor-outdoor philosophy. Bedrooms open towards tropical gardens, bathrooms extend outside, terraces become genuine living spaces and pools are hidden between dense vegetation. Despite the generous dimensions and level of comfort, the accommodations never lose the intimate, barefoot character that defines the resort.
Our Stay – Oceanfront Pool Suite
During our stay, we experienced one of Baoase’s Oceanfront Pool Suites, and this is perhaps where we understood the resort’s philosophy best. From the outside, everything feels wonderfully relaxed and tropical. Inside, however, you discover a level of luxury and attention to detail that is considerably higher than the understated surroundings initially suggest.
The suite combines a spacious bedroom and living area with a beautiful bathroom and a large private terrace opening towards the Caribbean Sea. Outside, the private pool and whirlpool are surrounded by tropical vegetation, while loungers and a dining area turn the terrace into an additional living space. The combination of privacy, space and direct ocean views makes it remarkably easy to spend a substantial part of the day without ever leaving the suite.
Beachfront Pool Suite:
What surprised us most was the exceptionally high level of comfort hidden behind Baoase’s barefoot aesthetic. Beautiful materials and meticulous finishing are complemented by virtually every contemporary amenity one could wish for. Premium beauty products, a Dyson hairdryer and a Sonos sound system are provided, while technology has been cleverly integrated rather than allowed to dominate the interior. Even the television remains hidden inside the furniture and rises electronically at the foot of the romantic canopy bed when required.
The bathroom continues at the same level, with a beautiful bathtub, an impressive rain shower, generous dimensions and carefully selected materials. Everything feels luxurious without becoming overly polished or disconnected from the tropical environment. That contrast became one of our favourite aspects of Baoase. Nothing has been sacrificed in terms of luxury or modern comfort, yet almost none of it is displayed ostentatiously. You have the private pool, whirlpool, excellent technology, beautiful bathroom, premium amenities and all the space expected from a resort at this level, but the overriding feeling remains one of complete relaxation. Our Oceanfront Pool Suite perfectly encapsulated what Baoase does so well: very high-end luxury that never feels like it is trying to prove how luxurious it is.
Gastronomy
Gastronomy plays a more substantial role at Baoase than one might expect from such an intimate resort.
The culinary programme is overseen by Executive Chef Oliver Heinrich, and food is clearly regarded as an integral part of the Baoase experience rather than merely something that needs to be provided between days on the beach. The ambition of the kitchen, the quality of the ingredients and the amount of work invested in creating different dining experiences make gastronomy one of the resort’s genuine strengths.
The main Culinary Beach Restaurant occupies a particularly beautiful position beside the lagoon. Rather than feeling like a formal hotel dining room, tables are scattered beneath an open wooden structure surrounded by palms and tropical vegetation. From certain angles, the restaurant itself almost disappears into the garden.
During the daytime the atmosphere is deliberately relaxed. Breakfast unfolds slowly beside the lagoon and can be adapted around individual wishes, while lunch retains the same easy-going atmosphere. As evening approaches, the setting changes considerably, with the water, tropical gardens and subdued lighting creating a far more romantic environment.
The kitchen draws from an international repertoire, with European technique meeting ingredients and influences from the Caribbean and Asia. The culinary identity consequently fits naturally with the hotel itself: cosmopolitan, tropical and difficult to place within one single geographical tradition. An important part of the experience is how willing the kitchen is to cater to individual preferences. Guests are not forced into one rigid gastronomic format. Dietary requirements, personal tastes and specific wishes are taken seriously, and there is a genuine sense that the kitchen wants to create something around the guest rather than simply serve the same experience to everyone.
Baoase has also expanded the dining experience beyond one restaurant setting. The Sunset Deck Restaurant provides another waterside environment and becomes particularly beautiful as daylight begins to fade over the Caribbean. What makes the gastronomic programme especially successful during a longer stay is that every evening can feel completely different.
Throughout the week, Baoase develops different culinary themes across the Beach Restaurant and Sunset Deck, rather than simply changing a few dishes on the menu. Mexican, Indian, seafood, Italian, barbecue and Asian evenings are among the concepts incorporated into the weekly programme. Each is approached as a complete experience, with the menu, presentation and atmosphere adapted around the theme.
These are much more than the traditional themed evenings sometimes associated with resort hotels. Considerable attention is paid to their execution. Seafood evenings can centre around oysters, lobster, crab, mussels and other products from the sea, while the barbecue focuses on cooking over fire and smoke and the Asian concept introduces sharing dishes and live sushi preparation. Music and the changing atmosphere around the beach further differentiate one evening from another.
The result is particularly valuable at a boutique resort. You can stay at Baoase for several nights and repeatedly dine within the property without feeling that you are simply returning to the same restaurant. The setting may be familiar, but the experience continually changes. Private dining is another important part of the offering. Rather than limiting dinner to a restaurant reservation, Baoase can create secluded meals around the property, making use of its beach and tropical setting.
Most importantly, however, the gastronomic quality matches the ambition. The cooking operates at a genuinely high level. There is refinement and technique in the dishes without the food becoming disconnected from the surroundings. It remains fresh, generous and appropriate to Curaçao, while the precision and quality elevate it far beyond what one might expect from conventional resort dining.
That flexibility arguably suits Baoase better than a collection of numerous separate restaurants would. Gastronomy here is closely connected with place: eating beside the lagoon, beneath the palms and only metres from the Caribbean Sea is part of the experience itself.
Baoase could quite easily rely on its spectacular setting and still satisfy most guests. It doesn’t. The considerable effort invested in gastronomy, the changing themes, individual attention and ability to cater to personal wishes make dining one of the more surprising aspects of the entire stay.
Hotel Assets
The greatest asset at Baoase is undoubtedly its waterfront.
The protected lagoon provides calm water for swimming and creates a very different environment from Curaçao’s more exposed coastline. Instead of one long, conventional hotel beach, the shore has been divided into a collection of intimate areas. Cabanas appear between palm trees, wooden platforms extend towards the water and individual seating areas are tucked between rocks and vegetation.
Dedicated Beach Butlers provide service around the waterfront, while guests can use snorkelling equipment and kayaks to explore the lagoon and surrounding water. A mineral infinity pool offers an alternative to the sea, in addition to the numerous private pools attached to individual villas and suites.
Wellness follows the same small-scale philosophy as the rest of Baoase. Rather than centring everything around an enormous indoor spa, massages and beauty treatments can be arranged either in the privacy of a villa or in a dedicated gazebo close to the beach. The menu encompasses several massage techniques alongside body treatments and beauty services. Guests wanting to exercise have access to the Baoase Health Club, located opposite the main resort. The facility includes cardiovascular and strength-training equipment as well as free weights and space for functional exercise. Personal coaching can be arranged, while access is available around the clock for hotel guests. But Baoase becomes particularly interesting when looking beyond the physical facilities.
The resort can organise a broad selection of private experiences around Curaçao, allowing guests to combine days of complete seclusion with exploring the island. Guided excursions head towards the less developed western coastline, while private walks through Willemstad introduce its architecture, street art and local history. More active possibilities include hiking around Christoffelberg as well as diving and snorkelling excursions to some of Curaçao’s better-known underwater locations.
The sea naturally plays a central role. Baoase has its own 42-foot Boston Whaler 420 Outrage, which can be privately chartered with crew for up to eight guests. Rather than following one fixed itinerary, excursions can be adapted around the guests, whether that means spending a day moving between beaches along Curaçao’s western coastline, snorkelling, diving or simply heading onto the Caribbean for sunset.
The more recently developed Bida Island, situated adjacent to Baoase, extends the resort further onto the water. It provides another private beach environment with cabanas and a somewhat livelier atmosphere at selected moments, creating an interesting counterpoint to the tranquillity of the main property.
For guests who prefer not to leave Baoase at all, that remains entirely possible. The combination of private pools, lagoon, beach, wellness, tropical gardens and multiple hidden seating areas means the resort functions particularly well as a destination in itself.
And perhaps that is Baoase’s most convincing asset: you can experience Curaçao from here, but you never feel obliged to.
Why go?
Baoase Curaçao succeeds because it doesn’t attempt to compete with the Caribbean’s enormous palace resorts. Instead, it offers something considerably more intimate: a tropical hideaway where villas disappear behind palm trees, breakfast is served beside a turquoise lagoon and it is still possible to find a waterfront cabana that feels entirely your own. The accommodation is unusually varied for such a small property. Couples can retreat into romantic beachfront pool suites, while substantial multi-bedroom villas make Baoase equally compelling for families seeking space and privacy. Gastronomy is taken seriously, the private lagoon is exceptional and experiences ranging from wellness beside the beach to exploring Curaçao aboard Baoase’s own yacht broaden the stay without disturbing the resort’s wonderfully unhurried rhythm.
Most importantly, the luxury rarely feels forced. Behind the relaxed barefoot atmosphere lies an exceptionally high level of comfort, technology, service and attention to detail. Everything you would expect from a truly luxurious resort is there, but almost none of it is displayed ostentatiously. There are no vast marble lobbies or monumental hotel buildings demanding attention. Instead there is weathered timber, sand beneath your feet, Balinese sculptures hidden among the vegetation and the Caribbean Sea appearing unexpectedly between the palms.
We arrived with high expectations, yet Baoase still managed to surpass them. The privacy, setting, gastronomy and overall level of refinement are genuinely exceptional. Baoase is polished without feeling polished over – understated luxury at a remarkably high level. And that may be the greatest luxury of all.
