The Datai Langkawi
Langkawi
The Datai Langkawi may very well be the ultimate “rainforest meets ocean” resort. Nestled between the slopes of ancient Mount Machinchang and the turquoise waters of Datai Bay on Langkawi Island, it spans 750 hectares of protected rainforest and beachfront. Ultra-luxurious villas and suites are thoughtfully placed among the trees or above the canopy, offering total immersion in nature and spectacular views. With personalised service, sublime nature experiences, monumental architecture seamlessly integrated into its surroundings, outstanding gastronomy, a deeply committed approach to sustainability, and more, The Datai Langkawi truly sits in a league of its own.
Location & Resort
The island of Langkawi, off the north‑western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is far more than just a beach destination. Known affectionately as the “Jewel of Kedah”, it spans lush rainforests, marbled mountain ranges and idyllic white‑sand shores. In 2007, the island and its surrounding islets were declared a UNESCO Global Geopark, celebrating their karst limestone formations, caves, rich biodiversity, and deep-rooted cultural myths. Here, one moment you’re lounging by the sea, the next you’re following a river path through mangroves or gazing up at the towering rainforest canopy. This rare blend makes Langkawi a layered and immersive natural escape.
Set in one of the island’s most pristine corners, The Datai Langkawi lies between the ancient rainforest slopes of Mount Machinchang (a mountain formed over ten million years) and the tranquil azure waters of Datai Bay, itself rated by National Geographic among the world’s top‑ten beaches. The resort’s 750‑hectare estate places guests deep within nature: a private hilly rainforest backdrop leads down to beachfront serenity, creating a rare and truly unique equilibrium between wilderness and luxury. It’s the best integration of nature and luxury we’ve ever seen.
The journey from Langkawi International Airport takes approximately 40 minutes by road, entering into a world of calm and nature. From the moment you arrive, The Datai makes a memorable impression. You glide through lush vegetation, arriving in one of the resort’s ultra-luxurious vehicles (think Bentley, BMW 7 Series, or a limo van) at the elegant lobby, where expansive rainforest vistas meet glimpses of the Andaman Sea. The architecture sits quietly within the canopy rather than dominating it, creating an immediate sense of immersion in nature, complemented by the luxury of a secluded resort.
Architecture and design at The Datai reflect this commitment to blend into nature rather than dominate it. Renowned architect Kerry Hill anchored the main building on a forest ridge 40 metres above sea level, 300 metres back from the beach, in order to preserve the shoreline’s integrity and allow the rainforest to remain undisturbed. Natural materials were reused, trees felled sparingly and native flora preserved, so that the resort almost disappears into its setting. The palette of green foliage, sandy beige, and sea blue reflects the resort’s natural layers. Some features feel truly monumental, like the temple-like stairs descending from the main building to the beach, straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.
Wildlife is everywhere: on our first day, we spotted the utterly charming dusky leaf monkeys, toucans, a variety of butterflies, tropical birds, and more. What’s remarkable is how this abundance of wildlife coexists so seamlessly with guests at The Datai, creating a rare harmony between nature and luxury.
The Datai Langkawi underwent a major renovation in 2017–2018. The project refreshed its accommodations, added a nature centre and beachfront wellness facilities, and enhanced the rainforest landscaping to deepen the connection with nature and sustainability. Interiors at The Datai Langkawi lean heavily on local tropical hardwoods such as Balau timber and Belian wood shingles, alongside a basalt stone base and Langkawi stone marble, reflecting the resort’s rainforest setting and architectural lineage. The colour palette is warm and earthy, with timber panelling and wooden beams that hold the roof structure, while the lighting is subtle and refined, creating a serene, grounded atmosphere that remains deeply connected to the island’s spirit.

Our Stay
We stayed in a Rainforest Villa at The Datai Langkawi, a beautifully secluded space of 123 m² raised on stilts amid the heart of the tropical rainforest. The villa featured a king‑size or twin bed dressed in Egyptian cotton linen, a generous daybed, a writing desk, and a vanity table, along with a spacious, very luxurious bathroom and a balcony that looked out over the forest canopy.
We enjoyed the sense of stepping into nature without sacrificing luxury. The quiet rustle of leaves and the sound of the river just below became part of our morning coffee ritual. Though the villa offered true immersion in the forest, it remained within convenient reach of the beach, pool and dining venues via buggy service and rainforest paths. If you prefer direct beach access or a private pool instead of forest immersion, opting for a Beach Collection or Rainforest Pool Villa would be advisable.
Gastronomy
Dining at The Datai is deeply entwined with the resort’s nature and luxury credentials. Each venue offers a distinctive setting and cuisine style:
- The Dining Room: Located by the main pool amid fig trees, this venue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast offers a mix of international selections and local favourites, and the quality is truly exceptional. For example, all pastries are refreshed every 30 minutes to stay crisp and fresh (the sea salt croissant is arguably the best we’ve ever tasted); the à la carte menu features indulgent options like foie gras, truffle, crab, and lobster; and all drinks, from cocktails to fresh juices, are made to order. As evening falls it becomes a refined dinner destination, offering à la carte and multi‑course degustation menus that combine European technique with Asian influences, and all framed by rainforest views. The 10-course degustation menu offers a journey through contemporary European haute cuisine, where Chef Chai blends cross-cultural methods with the subtleties of the Asian palate.
- Gulai House: Nestled deep within the rainforest, this award‑winning restaurant is styled like a traditional Malay kampung house, with rustic décor, floor seating in places, and ambient lighting that complements the jungle surroundings. It specialises in authentic Malaysian cuisine, allowing guests to savour heritage dishes in a setting that immerses the senses. Make sure to try the Satay Gamelan and the Signature Itik Serati Gulai Kawah Kundur Kampung (traditional Kedahan duck curry with fresh winter melon).
- The Pavilion: Perched atop 30‑metre stilts above the rainforest canopy, this open‑air Thai restaurant offers sweeping views over the forest while serving traditional Thai cuisine crafted with herbs harvested fresh from the resort’s own gardens. The setting feels extraordinary and the experience quite unique. We loved the Ayuthaya Set Menu, offering a variety of dishes based on ancient recipes from the Thai Ayutthaya Kingdom.
- Beach Club & Beach Bar: Set on the sand beside Datai Bay, these beachfront venues provide a relaxed yet stylish atmosphere. The Beach Club offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a casual dining menu (think wood‑fire pizzas, fresh seafood off the grill and local snacks). The Bar presents signature cocktails and sunset views over the Andaman Sea.
- The Lobby Lounge: Overlooking the Andaman Sea and rainforest edge, this open‑air lounge is ideal for afternoon tea, cocktails, cigars and relaxed evening drinks in a sweeping panoramic setting. The drinks and spirits menu is truly impressive and of exceptional quality.
- Private Dining: For guests celebrating a milestone or simply wanting something extraordinary, the resort offers bespoke dining: candle‑lit dinners on the beach, private rainforest terrace meals, customised menus with personal butlers, crafted to match the moment and setting.
Our favourites included Gulai House, with its evocative rainforest setting and rich Malaysian–Indian flavours, and The Dining Room, perfect for a fine dining experience by the pool. What truly sets dining apart at The Datai is the extraordinary attention to detail: table linen is freshly pressed before each meal; the wine list is not only outstanding but also very reasonably priced (a rare find at a top luxury resort); ingredient quality is exceptional, even in such a remote location; and service is nothing short of world-class. It’s yet another example of how The Datai excels in style and sophistication.

A deeply immersive wilderness experience.

The Datai Langkawi is setting the standard for sustainable luxury, with a strong focus on Zero Waste to Landfill. In 2024, the resort diverted 549,164 kg of waste from landfill, achieving 96 % efficiency through initiatives such as banning single-use plastics, recycling and upcycling materials, managing wastewater, and transforming food waste into soil for cultivating plants and herbs. Nearly all food waste was composted or donated for animal feed, while thousands of glass bottles, ceramics, Styrofoam, and used oil were recycled or upcycled.
Another standout example is The Lab, designed and built by the resort’s Sustainability and Engineering team. Its construction incorporated 7,968 wine, champagne, beer, and liquor bottles, with the interior and exterior back walls made from 280 kg of crushed plastic, showcasing The Datai’s creativity in turning waste into functional, educational, and inspiring spaces. Together, these initiatives demonstrate how the resort blends luxury hospitality with tangible environmental impact.
- Cultural Experiences: Cooking classes in Malay, Thai and Indian cuisine; craft demonstrations and local‑heritage sessions.
- Golf & Sports: Championship‑level Els Club Teluk Datai golf course is only a few minutes away, and there are tennis and padel courts, plus fitness and wellness programmes.
- Aquatic Escapades: Cruises aboard the “Gadis Pulao” catamaran, guided snorkelling, private‑beach experiences, and two sublime pool areas.
- Spa, wellness & Mindfulness: The Datai Spa is a sanctuary of serenity, perfectly blending rainforest immersion with holistic wellness. Treatments are designed to awaken the senses while reconnecting the body with the surrounding jungle, complemented by predominantly outdoor relaxation areas. This deep integration with nature makes it one of the most relaxing spas we’ve ever experienced. Guests can also enjoy forest-based yoga, guided meditation sessions, spa rituals using locally sourced ingredients, and tranquil nature walks, all curated to restore balance and mindfulness.
Why Go?
The Datai Langkawi might be the most immersive resort we’ve ever visited. It’s a place where nature truly embraces luxury, and every moment is shaped by the surrounding rainforest. Monumental architecture rises gracefully from the canopy, with suites and villas tucked above, within, and below the forest, offering complete immersion and breath-taking views. Service is flawless, dining is world-class, every detail is meticulously considered, and sustainability is woven seamlessly into the experience. This rare fusion of comfort, elegance, and deep connection with nature makes The Datai Langkawi feel like a world entirely its own. World-class, and simply exceptional.
