Location & Hotel
Penang, often called the “Pearl of the Orient,” is a vibrant Malaysian island celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, historic architecture, and world-famous street food. Its capital, George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is where colonial-era buildings stand alongside colourful street art, bustling markets, and a dynamic food and beverage scene. The city offers a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity, with the Andaman Sea just steps away, providing the perfect mix of cultural exploration and seaside relaxation. Penang is also widely recognised as one of the best food cities in Asia, making it a true destination for culinary enthusiasts.
Nestled at 55 Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah in George Town, The Millen Penang, Autograph Collection, opened in 2025 and quickly established itself as one of the island’s standout properties. This 5-star hotel enjoys a prime location where the city’s vibrant energy meets the serene coastline, offering guests the best of both worlds. The atmosphere is sleek and refined, anchored by a striking infinity pool with sea views, while the city’s renowned colonial centre is just a short walk away.
The Millen’s design embodies a seamless fusion of heritage flair and contemporary luxury, where colonial-inspired elegance meets modern sophistication. Interiors are thoughtfully curated, combining rich textures, bold colours, and refined materials to create spaces that are both visually striking and supremely comfortable. Every detail reflects a nod to design, from high ceilings and open layouts to references to Penang’s cultural history.
The Millen Penang’s design is a fusion of colonial elegance and contemporary sophistication. The palette of soft creams, deep blues, and ochre accents, paired with textured fabrics and sleek furniture, gives the hotel a distinctive yet comfortable personality. The lobby features a striking black-and-white checkered floor, complemented by a sculptural chandelier and curated art pieces that evoke the grandeur of a bygone era. Guest rooms continue this theme with marble-clad interiors, high-quality linens, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the city and/or the Andaman Sea.

Our stay
We stayed in the Grand Loft with both city and sea view. What struck us most were the refined materials (plush bathrobes, 400-thread linen), smart technology (motorised curtains, motion-sensor lighting) and thoughtful layout, layered with design and purpose. We particularly appreciated the bathtub located by a full-height window.
The suite truly felt like a luxury apartment: separate living room and sitting area, a generous bedroom, dual vanities and both bathtub and standing rain-shower. The view was compelling: waking up to city rooftops, and later observing the sea horizon shimmering at dusk. The Nespresso machine, soundbar + Chromecast TV, and smart lighting all added layers of comfort.
Gastronomy
Dining at The Millen Penang reflects the island’s rich heritage and contemporary flair. The hotel offers three distinctive dining venues, each with its own ambiance and menu:
- Lili reinvents traditional Malaysian cuisine with a contemporary sensibility, blending local heritage with refined presentation. The interior exudes understated elegance, with clean architectural lines, warm wood textures, and greenery that evoke a modern tropical feel. Standout dishes include the Atlantic Cod with assam pedas risotto, which balances tangy spice with delicate fish, and the Snapper Otak-Otak Toast, an inventive take featuring fish mousse, coconut foam, and sambal gel. To finish, the Chocolate Tian offers a rich yet refreshing finale. Pair your meal with a locally brewed kombucha or a Tea Story cocktail such as the Chelsea Garden, a fragrant mix of Whittard Chelsea Garden tea and Prosecco.
- Good Society transitions seamlessly from a daytime café to a chic and wonderful bar in the evening. The space boasts a black-and-white checkered floor, plush seating, and a marble-topped bar, exuding a timeless elegance. Start your day with the Devonshire Set, featuring freshly baked scones, clotted cream, and house-made strawberry jam, or enjoy a light sandwich accompanied by The Millen Espresso, a signature local coffee blend. In the evening, the bar offers a selection of wines and cocktails.
- Blacklinen elevates the art of grilling with its focus on premium aged meats and seafood. The restaurant’s minimalist design, featuring dark wood tones and soft lighting, creates an intimate dining experience.

- The Nut & Meg Spa: Inspired by Penang’s nutmeg heritage, the spa offers a curated menu of signature treatments using locally sourced ingredients. Each of the four private suites features its own bathtub, rain shower, and steam room, allowing guests to fully unwind in total privacy.
- Fitness and wellness: The 24-hour gym is equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, complemented by a private yoga studio for personal sessions or guided stretching routines.
- Meetings & events: From the elegant Upperton Hall ballroom (home to Penang Island’s longest LED screen) to a collection of daylight-filled meeting rooms, the hotel caters equally well to business gatherings and social celebrations.
From our experience, The Millen excels in offering a smooth transition from urban discovery to rest and renewal. The pool deck, in particular, provided a calm vantage point to take in the coastal views.
