Rang Mahal – the best Indian in Bangkok
There are several Indian restaurants in Bangkok, but Rang Mahal is the best one in the city. The restaurant is located on the top floor, the 26th, of the Rembrandt Hotel & Towers Bangkok so you can enjoy some great views of the Sukhumvit district as well.
Executive Chef Rajan Mishra and the owners of Indian origin make sure of giving you the most genuine Indian restaurant experience in Bangkok, and guest chefs are flown in from India as well. You can either dine in the main and quite noisy dining room for 125 guests or you can have one of the more private rooms. The ambience feels Indian and smells Indian even if the restaurant’s interior is more standardised for an international crowd. There are no typical guests and and it is nice to see western businessmen and politicians as well as Indian locals and Thai patrons among the clientele.
The cuisine is mostly inspired by the northern Indian flavours which means that the restaurant’s charcoal-fired clay tandoor oven plays a role in much of what is served. The menu is changed on a regular basis, but order in a tasting menu to try a broader range of the many delicacies. There are loads to choose from, but murgh tikka (boneless chicken marinated and cooked in the tandoor oven) and the tandoori prawns (jumbo prawns marinated in Indian spices and finished in the tandoor oven as well) will become best friends with your taste buds. There is a wide selection of vegetarian dishes such as the Jaipuri that becomes extra delicious when eaten with one of the traditional Indian breads such as roti or tandoori naan. Whatever you have should be combined with some basmati rice. Our favourite course which also is made in the restaurant’s fantastic tandoor oven is the Murgh Malai kebab with chicken and cheese.
Order in a bottle of red wine from the fully approved wine list to match the spicy food or have some Indian Kingfisher beer and be prepared that the ambience of the restaurant is somewhat noisy and that is not only due to the live music played. Make a reservation for the private dining room with access to the terrace if you want to have a romantic time or business privacy. Otherwise just accompany the fully booked dining room and enjoy your dinner in Bangkok’s best Indian restaurant.
