Narbona is located on the countryside not far from Punta del Este. Some driving on dirt roads without any signs and voilà you have arrived at what might look simple at a first glance, but you will soon notice the many qualities of Narbona.
The property is from 1909 and is an old estancia, but the owning Cantón family has not been around for that long. The Argentinean businessman and head of the Cantón family Eduardo, or simply “Pacha” as he is called since he is a big soccer fan, runs three properties in Uruguay of which the Four Seasons resort outside Carmelo is the most famous. In addition to his hotels and restaurants he also runs a successful cheese manufacturing business and has in recent years also started to produce quality wines.
The Narbona property not too far from Punta del Este is managed by one of Eduardo “Pacha” Cantón’s sons, Jerónimo, who is one of the owner’s four children. Jerónimo has a relaxed attitude to his role and it is obvious that he was born into the life he is living today at the beautiful estancia surrounded by hundreds of grapevines. There are mostly the typical Uruguayan Tannat grapes in the vineyard and Narbona just gets better and better in producing their own wines. The famous winemaker Michel Rolland has been hired as a consultant to secure the top quality of the wines and we can only say that you have to try it and pair it with your meal.
The atmosphere around the whole property is laid-back despite the fact that a serious business is going on. Narbona is famous for its cheeses and each day about 3,000 liters of milk are taken from 100 cows and made into high quality colonia, parmesan and mozzarella cheese. Of course you should have some of the property’s produced cheese together with their wines, and in addition Narbona also produces a lot of the other ingredients on your plate as well.
The cuisine is quite simple with dishes like fried calamari, fillet steak, spinach & home-made ricotta ravioli or lamb rack with onion focaccia, but it all tastes delicious and the surrounding environment makes it even tastier.
There is a young hungry spirit which surrounds Narbona – the team is young and vibrant and there is a lot of potential and promises of something even greater to come.
