Napa Valley, renowned for its world-class wineries and picturesque landscapes, offers a unique and exhilarating way to experience its beauty: a hot air balloon flight. Floating gently above the vineyards at sunrise, passengers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views, making it a truly unforgettable adventure.
The Experience
There are several companies offering balloon flights in Napa Valley. Based on a study that we did on the internet, comparing all the different options and companies, we decided that Napa Valley Aloft looked like the best company for this remarkable adventure. The company exists since 1978 and they are one of the pioneering companies offering balloon flights over the iconic Napa Valley. They are based in Yountville and also their take off locations are situated in this wonderful village, well known for the presence of Thomas Keller’s Restaurants The French Laundry and Bouchon. One of the reasons for us to choose Napa Valley Aloft for our balloon adventure is that they work with balloon baskets that accommodate fewer passengers than the other companies in Napa Valley, which makes the experience much more comfortable and relaxing.
Hot air balloon flights in Napa Valley typically begin at dawn, when the air is calm and the lighting is perfect for capturing the stunning scenery. As the balloon ascends, passengers can marvel at the patchwork of vineyards, rolling hills, and the meandering Napa River below. The sight of neatly arranged rows of grapevines stretching out in all directions, kissed by the soft morning light, is truly mesmerizing.
Preparing for the Flight
The day before the flight, via mail we were instructed what to bring and what not to bring. Logically, it is good to wear comfortable, closed shoes. And as in the very early morning, things can still be a bit chilly, we were also recommended to wear several layers of clothes to keep ourselves warm. On the other hand, backpacks or big cameras were not welcome. The day after, on June 12th, our flight would take place. We were expected to meet the crew of Napa Valley Aloft Balloon Rides at the Vinter’s Golf Club in Yountville at 5.15 am.
After a very short and convenient drive from our hotel, we were welcomed by two friendly ladies of the crew, who asked us to sign a waiver and who also handed us a document on which we could announce what the tip would be that we would like to offer to the team at the end of the experience. While we were waiting for the pilot to arrive, there was a light breakfast and coffee available. After a brief safety briefing, we were transported to the launch site. This launch site is not always the same, and it depends on the wind where the balloons take off. We were transported towards a parking lot very near to Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery. Watching the balloon being inflated is an exciting prelude to the flight itself. Once the balloon was ready, we were asked to climb into the basket. Even though it might look a bit challenging, getting into the basket is a very easy process. There are holes in the side of the basket which enable you to put your feet inside and which act as a ladder. Once inside the basket, things feel comfortable. A few seconds after we boarded, with a few blasts from the burner, we gently lifted off the ground.
A Bird’s-Eye View
As the balloon drifted higher, the full scope of Napa Valley’s beauty unfolded. The landscape was dotted with renowned wineries, lush forests, and charming towns. The view changes with the seasons: in spring and summer, the valley is vibrant with green vines and blooming flowers, while autumn brings a spectacular display of reds, oranges, and yellows as the vineyards prepare for the harvest. Our pilot was extremely skillful and friendly and gave a lot of explanation of the sights surrounding us. At a certain point, he brought the balloon all the way down and it felt that we were landing. But in the same smooth way as he did this, he also increased the height again and brought us back into the sky. It was fascinating to see how well he controlled this huge and colorful object that moved us through the sky.
Highlights of the Flight
– Sunrise Views: The early morning light creates a magical ambiance, with the sun rising over the valley, casting long shadows and highlighting the natural beauty of the region.
– Vineyard Patchwork: From above, the meticulously planted vineyards resemble a giant quilt, with varying shades of green and gold.
– Wildlife Spotting: Passengers might spot deer, birds, and other wildlife from their elevated vantage point.
– Photographic Opportunities: The serene flight provides ample opportunities for photography, capturing the essence of Napa Valley’s charm.
Landing and Celebration
After about an hour of serene floating, our pilot began the descent. He looked around and decided where he was going to land the balloon. We were asked to hold some ropes on the inside of the basket, in order to make sure that we would not fall in case the landing would be a bit hard. But in the end, it was not necessary. The pilot landed the basket in the most smooth way possible and we hardly felt that we had reached earth again. After the flight, we were brought back to the meeting point at Vinter’s Golf Club and were offered a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate our successful and memorable flight.
