Upper House Dining – dining with a view

* This restaurant closed in 2019

On the west coast of Sweden in Gothenburg, on the top floors in the middle tower of the triple tower hotel Gothia Towers you will find a hotel in a hotel called Upper House with a restaurant on its top floor called Upper House Dining. Finding Upper House Dining might seem like a maze, but its personnel will already be on the ground floor waiting to welcome you and accompany you up to the right floor in the right tower.  This is a restaurant that pays homage to the classics of service in fine dining.

Executive Chef is Krister Dahl. He oversees all four restaurants in the hotel and has put a lot of effort in on how to make Upper House something exceptional. Krister is actually so far the only person in the world who has ever won four gold medals at the Culinary Olympics, which is held in Germany every fourth year and where national teams compete.

Upper House Dining is run by Head Chef Måns Backlund. Måns started out his training in Gothenburg in the nineteen-nineties, but has since then worked at several fine dining restaurants around the world before coming back again to make his mark. The food is seasonal with a lot of the ingredients coming from the west coast. The restaurant opened in 2013, but they are already developing local growers and planning beehives and a small garden on the roof.

The kitchen manages to avoid the temptation to add too many flavours into one plate, which results in focused dishes with clear and mostly intense tastes and a good mix of textures.  All the personnel in the front house are also sommeliers so there is a good expertise behind the matching wine menu. For those who prefer they also arrange a well matched non-alcoholic tea- and juice menu. The interior is elegant and comfortable but subdued in order to enhance the food and outside stellar view.

There is only one menu so do not go there expecting to order a couple of à la carte dishes. It is a classical fine dining when it comes to sitting and enjoying a long meal with a multitude of dishes. But even if the menu has a lot of dishes it does not feel long. Being on the twentieth fifth floor with panoramic windows gives you a wonderful view over the city and when dusk has come it is a real enjoyment with attentive service, city lights and an interesting tasteful menu, and in the end time just passes by.

Upper House Dining scored 81 points of 100 points in our rating system. View our Top 60 of the world. Back to the reviews.
