La Vie – the promise
Thomas Bühner was not sure of what career he should pursue so he attended a test at the local job centre. Bühner achieved high scores in cookery, baking and agriculture so he decided to become a chef. It did not take him long after having promised his parents to become a chef until he became a really good one. Today, Chef Patron Thomas Bühner is one of the foremost in Germany and can easily compete with any great chef around the world.
Chef Patron Thomas Bühner runs his restaurant together with his wife Thayarni Kanagaratnam who also is the Restaurant Manager. She origins from Jaffna in Sri Lanka and is a perfect lively contrast to Chef Bühner’s personality that is a bit shy and humble. Together they sum up for an amazing team of cooking and hospitality. The Chef was born in the Tecklenburger Land region in Germany and he met his Thayarni when they both worked at Restaurant La Table in Dortmund. Everything has gone straight up to culinary stardom since they took over the business at La Vie in 2006, and the restaurant just becomes better and better. La Vie is located in the heart of the city of Osnabrück’s picturesque old town. You will find the restaurant in an eighteenth century old building known as Haus Tenge and its classic style makes it a perfect setting for a restaurant of La Vie’s calibre.
The main dining room is located on the first floor and you have great possibilities for private dining upstairs. La Vie has an extensive wine collection. Of course of amazing Riesling wines, but you will find wines from all over the world and Head Sommelier Sven Oetzel will make sure you have the best pairings. The main part of the wine collection is stored at the top floor in a six hundred years old roof vault.
Chef Patron Thomas Bühner’s cuisine has a pedigree from the French haute cuisine, but in true German fashion it is a lot of attention to the small details on each plate. Dish after dish will arrive to you with an impeccable attention to details and the technical execution is flawless. You will recognise a lot of the ingredients in dishes like the filet from sole and smoked oyster with Buddha’s hand lime fennel, but the combination and perfect balance between the flavours you have not had anywhere else. Our favourite is the Finnish filet of reindeer with red cabbage, celery & hay. It is a dish you simply must have before you die.
La Vie is not located in any of the big international cities around the world, but it is a restaurant that is a destination in itself and easily worth a detour to reach. Make a reservation and let Thomas Bühner and Thayarni Kanagaratnam take care of you. An experience you will not forget.
