Mathias Dahlgren Matbaren – casual
Mathias Dahlgren has two restaurants – Matsalen and Matbaren. The restaurants are next to each other in Stockholm’s finest hotel, the Grand Hôtel. Mathias Dahlgren’s contrast to his more formal restaurant, Matsalen, is a place where people can feel at ease while being served fresh and inventive food. Every day there is a new menu of Swedish classics and international favorites executed à la Dahlgren.
The concept is different with only middle courses instead of starter, main and dessert. You are only allowed to order one dish at a time from the menu containing around fifteen dishes. You combine the Swedish and international dishes to your own perfect menu and all paired with great drinks that do not have to be a glass of wine. Depending on the dish it can just as easily be a beer to a specific dish or a cider. You probably only have three to four dishes and you will have had enough. We can recommend going with some vegetarian as a starter, then a meat and a fish dish and end with a dessert.
The ambience at Matbaren is different compared to Matsalen, much more laidback and the restaurant works well indeed for a business lunch or a more casual evening. The staff does what it should, even if that means nothing more than expected, lacking the extraordinary you always hope for at a top restaurant.
There is a fierce competition amongst the Nordic restaurants, but this gem manages to deliver year after year. Mathias Dahlgren Matbaren is a safe bet when you simply like to enjoy great food in a relaxed environment.
