Bhoga – contemporary swedish
Right in the middle of the centre of Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast in front of a 400 year old canal you will find Bhoga. It is a restaurant where you can savour some great contemporary Swedish dishes.
It is run and owned by the two chefs Niclas Yngvesson and Gustav Knutsson. Niclas started out as a chef in the late 90s and has worked his way from one-star to three-star kitchens for shorter periods of time around the world in the US, England, Australia, Norway and Singapore. Gustav has worked as a chef since the early 2000s, mainly in fine dining places in Gothenburg but also in China and Hong Kong.
Together they have created a restaurant which is focused on seasonal and organic local produce with a strong focus on vegetarian, fish and shellfish. You have a choice of a composed four, six or eight course menu and even though there is no à la carte you can order individual dishes from the menu. The cooking is modern but they also try to make use of traditional Nordic cooking methods like smoking, drying and fermentation. So expect dishes like tartar of langoustine with elderflower, chives, onion or pointed cabbage with pear, roe and marinated egg-yolk. The small focused menu changes continuously according to season.
Head sommelier Mikael Nypelius has created a well matched selection of pairings with wine, beer or non-alcoholic beverages. The wine is mostly natural and even though there is not a huge selection it is an interesting one. For the end of the meal there is a good selection of coffee and tea and if you like herbal tea they even make a fresh herbal tea.
The interior is stylish and the atmosphere nicely relaxed. Bhoga is actually to be found on the place of the first restaurant in Gothenburg, dated back to 1669. Fortunately for us Bhoga proudly continues on this tradition and serves some great current fine dining here now.
Bhoga scored 77 points of 100 points in our rating system. View our Top 60 of the world. Back to the reviews.
