This small charming restaurant is situated in Kreuzberg, one of the trendy districts of Berlin. The restaurant is on Paul-Lincke-Ufer, a street that came into being with the creation of the Landwehr Canal in 1845 to 1850.
The wood-paneled traditional looking restaurant went through a change in 2010 when Sebastian Frank became chef there. Sebastian Frank is an Austrian Chef, but followed his partner Jeannine Kessler to Berlin. 2014 he and Jeannine took over the restaurant and are now jointly managing it. Prior to Horvath, Sebastian worked several years at the famous Steirereck in Vienna and also some years at the Interalpen Hotel Tyrol. So Sebastian has his Austrian cooking roots.
At Horváth he builds upon these Austrian roots. He is focusing on discovering the core traditional flavours and then cooking dishes based on that. He is only using local produce so you will not find saltwater fish here but instead an interesting selection of freshwater fish. The dishes are modern and fresh with a strong influence of vegetables, especially roasted, in season. Roasting seems to be a technique he likes and used on a trout results in a delicious taste and intriguing texture. You will not find olive oil but instead there will be a lot of interesting Austrian versions, like pumpkin seed oil and chicken fat.
Restaurant Manager and Head Sommelier Michael Werner pairs the dishes expertly with an in-depth selection of only German and Austrian wines. The wine list of about 200 references has an extensive and interesting selection thanks to Michael’s good relations with several smaller and very interesting and tasteful German and Austrian wineries.
You have a choice of à la carte menu or you can go for a signature menu of four, six, eight or even the full ten course menu. Ten is an impressive amount and you might wonder if you can manage? But the courses are deliciously light and you just stop counting and look forward for the next course.
Any way you go with the menu, Sebastian and his young and vibrant kitchen team will serve you tasteful and creative dishes with some great regional wines.
