History & more
The Ceretto winery in Alba (Langhe), Piedmont, has a rich history. This family business started with Riccardo Ceretto in the 1930’s who did not own any vineyards but produced wine from purchased grapes. His sons Bruno and Marcello started the change for Ceretto, with their innovative thinking for that time, they were convinced of the importance of the soil (like in Burgundy). In the 1960’s they started mapping the best soils in the area. The vineyards are now handed over to their children and are an example for the winemaking world. The family looks to the future and stand together with a shared vision, with respect for expertise, each other, the soil, the vineyards, the people, the region, etc.
Next to wine, the family has also different cultural/gastronomic projects such as 3 Michelin star restaurant Piazza Duomo (Alba), traditional Piedmontese cuisine at La Piola (Alba) and art project such as the Chapel by Sol Lewitt and David Tremlett, in a Barolo Brunate vineyard at La Morra.
The Wines
“All that I know has been a gift of the years spent waiting for buds and fruits, fearing the incoming clouds close to the harvest, listening to the wind that brings hail, watching the sun beating on the stump, pruning and observing pruning, picking up a handful of dirt, closing the fist, and opening it to see whether the earth crumbles, or sticks.”
Marcello Ceretto
This quote shows the passion this family puts into their wines and reflects the quality they want to deliver.
Ceretto has different lands and estates spread over the Langhe area where they make different types of wine, always following the family standards. These wines are elegant, sometimes powerful, but most importantly a reflection of what the soil and grape has to offer.
- Sparkling wines: Moscato d’Asti and Spumante d’Asti.
- White wines: Langhe DOC Arneis and Langhe DOC Bianco.
- Red wines: DOC Dolcetto d’Alba, DOC Barbera D’Alba, DOC Nebbiolo d’Alba, Langhe DOC Rosso, Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG and Barolo Chinato.
Next to this general appellations Ceretto also has some exquisite cru’s:
- Barolo DOCG: Bricco Rocche, Brunate, Bussia, Prapò and Cannubi San Lorenzo
- Barbaresco DOCG: Asili, Bernadot, Gallina
Hospitality
Tours and tastings
Ceretto offers different types of visits. A classic visit and tasting, a Nebbiolo experience (discover the different aspects of Nebbiolo), a Cru degustation and a rarity degustation (this is a private tour and degustation where you discover Cru’s and older vintages).
Food
After your visit at the Ceretto winery you can enjoy a lunch or dinner at one of the two restaurants of the Ceretto family. Piazza Duomo (high gastronomy, 3 Michelin stars and among the 50 best restaurants in the world) or La Piola (a place where you can discover the classic Piemontese dishes). We can recommend both!
A special thanks to Licata Vini for organizing this visit and the Ceretto family for their hospitality.
