Restaurant
Werneckhof By Geisel
Munich, Germany
Anyone walking between the bourgeois facades of the Werneckstrasse in Munich’s Schwabing district would expect a well-kept Bavarian restaurant behind the name Werneckhof by Geisel. But once inside you will discover a truly unique experience, combining a European and Asian cuisine. The restaurant is over 100 years old but has never been so modern with its special Euroasian cuisine.
The Werneckhof receives its guests in a cozy Art-Nouveau atmosphere. An entrance in Bavarian style, the interior with dark wood, antique buffet cabinets, chandeliers, red benches and dark-wooden chairs bring contrast to the light and creative kitchen style of the chef. It is with this convincing contrast that the team of Werneckhof quickly received two Michelin stars and 18 points in the Gault Millau guide.
Master of this culinary conviction is Tohru Nakamura, a Munich native with Japanese roots. Together with his team he serves a modern cuisine with influences from national and Asian culinary culture. He learned his trade in the Restaurant Königshof, spent several years working in celebrated gourmet restaurants around the world like 3-star Michelin Oud Sluis from Sergio Herman, Vendôme and in Tokyo’s Ishikawa. He then returned to his Bavarian homeland and gained quickly international recognition with his own special style.
Tohru is a purist, high-quality products are the most important and the chef puts special touches with lots of different aromas. But the essence always stays the nature of the main ingredient. Like his new creation with Imperial quail, don bocarte anchovies and a Périgord truffle sauce. Combining the best of both worlds, is shown with a beautiful creation of European lobster with pumpkin, apple, coriander and avocado being followed with Ozaki Wagyu, served with eggplant, walnut and a black pepper sauce. Together with the experienced sous-chef Dominik Schmid and team they guarantee daily a unique dining experience. And be ready at all time as you might get a real ‘shibuya’ experience as a surprise.
Of course for being top-level, one also needs a unique service team. At Werneckhof professionalism is combined with a young and motivated team. The twins Markus and Tobias Klaas are among the best hosts in the country. Markus Klaas, “Maître des Jahres 2018” at the Rolling Pin Awards, is leading the dining room as restaurant manager in a distinguish way. His twin brother Tobias is also very experienced and he was the ‘Sommelier of the Year 2017’. Guests will not only be convinced by his wine pairing but also by his non-alcoholic pairing which is full of new taste discoveries.
It is truly impressive to experience the journey throughout Tohru Nakamura’skitchen and dish after dish, guests become more and more astonished by his ‘Euroasian’ approach. If you are in Munich, dining at Werneckhof is really a must. A restaurant that follows his own direction and breaks away from the classical thinking. This combined with an experienced service, guarantees a great fine dining experience.
