Namib Dune Star Camp is a unique lodge located in the Namib region in Namibia. The Namib is a famous coastal desert of Khoekhoegowab origin. Its name means “vast place” and that is indeed what guest might expect when visiting this amazing region. In total, The Namib spans an area of more than 2,000 kilometres along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa. The Namib Desert is famous as the oldest desert in the world (about 43 million years old), and for its raw and sheer beauty. It got its present form about 2 million years ago and today it is an immense area of moving gravel plains and dunes of all shapes and sizes. It is one of the planet’s most extreme wildernesses and hides plenty of wonders of nature.
Namib Dune Star Camp is located inside the Namib-Naukluft Park, a national park in the Namib Desert, near the Naukluft mountain range. The famous Sossusvlei, the biggest touristic hotspot in Namibia, is located about a 90 minutes’ drive from the camp. Namib Dune Star Camp consist out of nine chalets only, perched on ancient sand dunes overlooking the spectacular landscapes of the Namib Desert. The camp offers the memorable experience of being out in the desert while providing luxuries like soft beds and hot showers. The property is part of The Gondwana Collection Namibia, which combines hospitality with nature conservation and social commitment in a sustainable manner. The camp is accessible from its sister property the Namib Desert Lodge (around a 20 minutes’ drive).
Rooms And Suites
Namib Dune Star Camp is an intimate camp that only features nine chalets or cabins, with quite some distance between them. This is important, as one of the main “attractions” at the lodge is… sleeping under the Namibian stars. Indeed, all rooms have a double bed designed to be wheeled out for a night in the dessert. And do not worry for the cool dessert nights, as extra bedding is supplied for those cooler nights under the stars.
Each cabin has an en-suite bathroom, a large bedroom and a spacious outside deck. The interior is minimalistic but very cosy, with beige, grey and brown colours that blend in with the surrounding nature. After a day of exploring the Namib Desert, guests can enjoy amazing views of the breath-taking scenery from the wide central deck. A sundowner while the sun slowly transformers the landscape in gold and red is an experience you will not easily forget.
Hotel Assets And Experiences
The biggest assets of Namib Dune Star Camp really are the unique surroundings and the possibility to enjoy the dessert without any obstruction at all. It is quite the experience to take in the desert wilderness from your outside bed with its stunning views on the stars and the crisp clean air. Guests can participate in sunset and sunrise walks as well to discover the surrounding dunes of the Namib Dune Star Camp with an experienced guide.
Multicourse dinners and pre-dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the communal building of the lodge, which seems to be under a blanket of stars thanks to the big windows. The camp is eco-friendly and the architecture, design and construction are carefully designed to ensure that it leaves a minimum footprint. Hot water and lights are provided by solar panels, and water is pumped from a nearby borehole. All the rest is provided by the nature itself.
Why Go?
Namib Dune Star Camp is much more than a lodge or a camp. It’s an experience that will bring you closer to nature. Sleeping outdoors, in the oldest desert in the world, in a comfortable bed under the Namibian stars, is amazing to say the least. A unique and memorable opportunity to be mindful of resources and to experience the desert like you will never have before.
Transport In Namibia
A trip through Namibia is one of the world’s most beautiful and exciting road trips. Only a small part of the roads are paved and most are gravel roads (mostly with quite some bumps and rocky/sandy parts). It is therefore highly recommended to rent a solid 4W4 vehicle. We did, and didn’t regret that choice for a second. We rented our car at Nambia2Go, powered by Gondwana, one of the most reliable renting companies in the country. The service was excellent, from the pick-up to the drop-off at the airport, and our Toyota 4×4 Fortuner was very spacious, fitted for all Namibian roads, and a true pleasure to drive with.
